By Quinton Kim | TOPIC: English Tips
We always look forward to learning English in Pines. We have night classes during the weekdays and they last for 2 hours only. The classes are divided into two: Survival English Class (SEC) which is under teacher Sean and Discussion Class which is being taught by teacher Jamie. In SEC, useful expressions are taught to us. We learn how to use the correct expressions when faced with a certain situation. For example, we get to know how to ask for directions, order food in a restaurant and start a conversation with a person whom we’ve met for the first time. On the other hand, Discussion class is where we talk about different topics like our personality and our culture. Now, as I have mentioned above, these classes only last for 2 hours and it is never enough, so we have to know how to make our study period more efficient. I am going to share some tips on how to do this.
How did you learn to speak your mother tongue fluently and naturally? It is because you listened and imitated the way your parents spoke when you were much younger. With that, we can say that listening is one of the most important steps when it comes to learning another language. Is language easily acquired by a child? Absolutely not! A lot of good English speakers are into watching movies, TV dramas, and singing songs from English speaking countries. So, listening to your teacher is one important step in studying English. Being a good listener will make you a good speaker and it will boost your confidence.
Talk about anything
Maybe you can’t do Yuna Kim’s triple axel if you just watch videos of her figure skating. In order to do it, you have to make efforts at least tens of thousands of times. This is the same when it comes to studying English. It is so much dead wood if you just watch people speak in English but don’t practice speaking yourself. Try to say things that pop up in your mind, raise questions and use expressions as often as you can. Don’t be afraid to commit a mistake whenever you are speaking and using the English language. We come to Pines to learn, not to test your level. Just throw your fears away and be open to corrections. You will become a fluent speaker in no time.
Make many friends.
It is undeniable that even though you have good rapport with your teacher, it is more comfortable to talk with your friends using English especially if you have the same English skill in speaking. Thus, becoming friends with your classmates is a must. It gives you the chance to talk to them about the class, culture, countries, and anything under the sun. Soon, all of you will be comfortable using the English language when discussing and talking to each other.
If you have already practiced speaking English around your friends, get yourself exposed outside of your comfort zone. If you get a chance to study English in Pines, you will be given chances to travel to various places with your batch mates during the weekends. The situation is challenging because you have to do things by yourselves like making reservations for accommodation and food. However, this is very exciting since you are forced you to say something in English. Once the trip is over, you will feel that you have succeeded in learning English, and that you are ready to face the world.
Given the tips, you will realize that learning English takes time and effort. The great news is that Pines Academy offers an environment conducive to learning especially for those who want to study English for the first time. Don’t miss the chance to improve your English skills. I recommend Pines Academy when it comes to achieving your goals in English.
